The Fischer-Dieskau Book of Lieder: The Original Texts of over 750 Songs (Limelight)

A mammoth work
I bought this to accompany the DFD 85th birthday re-issue of the 21 box set of Schubert Lieder, assuming that the texts would all be there - and revealing my musical ignorance to myself in the process. DFD's range is much bigger than 'just' Schubert! In fact, quite a few of the Lieder texts are not in this tome, and a number of the Schubert Lieder are not in the box set, as I discovered on playing the Janet Baker 2-disc set that came for Father's Day. So Schubert really calls for the Richard Wigmore collection of Lieder texts and translations, which has them all. That takes away nothing from this incredible volume. If anything, it has inspired me to try Wolf next, where a number of the simple but beautiful Mörike poems are to be found.

usefull book
it's a book that all singers should have, although you can find now everything through internet.I'm still the person like reading text from the book especially poems.

Listening to Lieder
The Fischer-Dieskau Book of Lieder is a beautifully produced book, and although a paperback, a pleasure to 'heft' in the hand. It is well organised with good indexes and with poem and translation on the same page - very useful when following the text while listening to a performance. The translations are excellent - not so much 'traductions' as is so often the case. And a fine introductory essay by Fischer-Dieskau - a brief survey of the character and attainments of Lieder, written - of course! - with special insight.I had long wanted this book but could never find it in regular book shops. What a satisfaction to get it with so little fuss through Amazon! I will be following performances of Lieder in future with greater understanding and pleasure.
