Ruark Audio R5 - Walnut

After reading many reviews of different all-in-one hi-fi systems to replace our aging Denon system, we decided to take the plunge and purchase the Ruark R5. Impressed to find when unpacking the box that it was enclosed in a soft fabric drawstring bag. The manual and initial set up wizard were simple to follow and the system was up and running in a matter of minutes. Nice to see a separate pre-amplified Phono input for our record deck. Having listened to various CDs, vinyl and radio/internet stations the sound quality is impressive with the ability to alter the bass and treble to suit our taste and room. It's not the cheapest but quality of the product and sound reproduction justifies the spend. It looks gorgeous too.

Had R5 for two days now andStill too scared to tell my children how much I paid😳. Was anxious about setting it up-dabs etc. What the hell is that? All I want is to play my cd’s and listen to radio3. Approached machine, remote and manual in hand,then handed everything over to my daughterWithin less than half an hour it was all set up!It is every thing I could wish for. It is handsome and the weighty feels makes you think this is something serious. The sound quality is superb and the volume can knock a pigeon out of a nearby tree.Is it worth the money? I’m still horrified at what I’ve spent, but a definite YES. It’s wonderful

What distinguishes this from other music streaming systems around the same price is the fact that, as well as having an extensive range of music streaming (and a CD player), it has internet radio, DAB and FM. While the sound of the streaming services is fine, the sound quality of its radio is superb, particularly taking into account the less than ideal broadcast quality of some radio transmissions. However Ruark do it, they make radio listening a pleasure. So while many streaming systems in this price range offer similar high quality music streaming, I would suggest that the R5 has the edge for people who like to listen fairly frequently to radio stations as well as music streaming. Having purchased one, and been so impressed with its quality, I purchased two more so as to have that high quality available in other rooms.

Bought to replace a 10 year old R4 (still going strong but didn’t offer R5’s impressive choice of internet-based music sources). Sound, styling, ease of use and build quality are all better than ever. Cheap? No. Value for money? Absolutely.

High quality sound and easy to use. My only disappointment is that I was hoping it could receive DAB but we are not in a good area for DAB reception. However, FM is fantastic.

Great sound in a great looking unit. Very easy to set up and the controls are intuitive to use. So far have just used DAB radio, CD player and Spotify.

Ok, I'd been looking at purchasing a Ruark system now for about 5 years. Initially looking at the R4 I decided to look into the new R5.So, system ordered (R5) and I spent a week looking forward to it arriving.I watched the Ruark YouTube video on unpacking and setting up the system before it arrived so that I was already familiar with it.I've now had the R5 playing music for about 12hrs. Wow !! The sound quality is second to none. Absolutely fantastic. Build quality is also fantastic..... it feels like it's been built to last. I've connected the R5 up to my home broadband so I've got a huge selection of internet radio stations. DAB & FM radio also.Paired it up to Spotify and again it's all sounding great.So, am I 100% happy seeing that I've purchased the 'Aston Martin' of stereo radio units ? The short answer is no. Here's why;The battery for the remote that came in a sealed bag was flat.Also, on inserting a CD into the player it just wouldn't produce any sound. The CD plays because the counter is counting. Just no sound 😔.I've now had to write to Ruark to explain this and await their reply. I somewhat feel a bitter taste in my mouth after spending a £1000 and it not being a hundred percent.Hopefully, these are just a couple of niggles that will be easily rectified.** Update ** 11th August 2019.My Ruark R5 has just had an automatic software update and I'm happy to report that the CD player is now working.

Was habe ich mich schwer getan mit der Entscheidung eine Anlage zu kaufen, die ich vorher nicht hören konnte, dessen Hersteller ich nicht kannte und die auch eine Menge Kleingeld kostet. Aber es sollte was Kompaktes und Schönes sein, ohne Abstriche im Sound und der Bedienung machen zu müssen. Da ist dann die Auswahl gar nicht mehr so groß. Da liest Mann Tests, guckt sich Rezensionen an und steht zum Schluß doch allein mit seiner Entscheidung da. Wahrscheinlich hätte ich das noch eine Weile so weiterbetrieben, hätte nicht meine alte TEAC-Anlage, als ob sie es geahnt hätte, dann nach 14 Jahren ihren Geist aufgegeben. Nun gut, mangels gleichwertiger Alternativen dann doch wieder hier bestellt...und zwei (!) Tage später stand das Ding dann zu Hause. Ach was sieht das Teil in echt schön aus... Über technische Daten möchte ich hier gar nicht schreiben, kann man alles nachlesen. An einem Abend alles problemlos eingerichtet. Phono mit ran, Fernseher gekoppelt, W-LAN eingerichtet und fertig. Das Gerät steht innerhalb eines Lowboardes und hat trotzdem einen wunderschönen Sound. Für unser 20 m² Wohnzimmer mehr als ausreichend. Es klingt überhaupt nicht anstrengend, der Bass hat ordentlich Kraft und die Höhen sind wunderbar ausgesteuert. Und das bei angezogener Handbremse. Gar nicht auszudenken was passiert wenn man hier Vollgas gibt. (Wir wohnen in einem Reihenhaus...) Endlich kein Kabelgewirr mehr, alles in einem Gerät und sehr leicht bedienbar. Sehr guter DAB-Empfang, selbst mit eingezogener Antenne.Für mich das Highlight, die Fernbedienung. Ein echter Handschmeichler, voller Funktionsumfang und einfach gut zu bedienen. Das passt im Zusammenspiel perfekt und gehört einfach dazu. Die Lautstärke mit einem leichgängigen Drehknopf bedienen, das Gefühl hatte ich das letzte Mal bei unserem alten Röhrenradio.Auch jetzt, nach 4 Wochen bin ich immer noch vollauf zufrieden und freue mich über ein schönes Einrichtungsstück zum Anschauen und Hören. Lediglich ein optisches Kabel für den TV-Empfang habe ich dann doch noch dazu gekauft.Kleinste Kritikpunkte, für die diejenigen, die danach suchen:-Hauptschalter auf der Rückseite, bei Nutzung als Einbaugerät etwas umständlich-Schrift am Display aus der Entfernung etwas klein, kann aber auch an meinem Alter liegen !)-man kann in Beschreibung und Aufmachung durchaus erwähnen, dass die Herstellung in China erfolgt und RUARK offensichtlich nur als Zwischenhändler und Designer wirkt. Am Gerät steht es dann auf der Verpackungskiste, der Anlage und auf der Fernbedienung auch drauf. Daraus auf Hinweise zur Qualität zu schließen, ist eine nach m.M. eine überholte Einstellung.So nun hoffe ich, dass ich nicht zu viel gelobt habe und vergebe ganz großzügige 5 goldene Sternchen....

J'utilise un poste radio avec avec une antenne pour écouter les radios locales et, il fonctionne très bien.Par contre, cet appareil n'en reçoit aucune avec l'antenne !

Zunächst war es ein Reinfall. Das Gerät hatte schon beim Auspacken Gebrauchs-Spuren und einen deutlich sichtbaren Fleck auf der Oberseite. Ich dachte ... "Geht sofort zurück für den Preis".ABER nach Rückfrage per Mail wurde ich vom Verkäufer sehr ordentlich betreut. Man hat mir versichert, dass der Versand (+ evtl. Rücklauf) über Amazon läuft und, dass sie darauf keinen Einfluss haben. Man hat mir einen Wechsel angeboten und als Alternative auch einen vernünftigen Rabatt akzeptiert. Ich habe den Rabatt gewählt und kann den Fakt des Rücklaufs und den Fleck unter diesem Gesichtspunkt gut verkraften.Für mich ist der Preis des Geräts ohnehin in Ordnung. Ich hatte in den letzten 15 Jahren drei verschiedene kleinere Anlagen (Sony, Sharp, Kenwood). Im Schnitt haben sie 5 Jahre gehalten, dann war irgendetwas kaputt, was eine Reparatur aber nicht lohnenswert erscheinen lies. Am Ende war das alles preiswerter asiatischer Plastik-Schrott.Ob die Anlage diesmal langlebiger ist, weiß ich heute nicht.... aber es fühlt sich so an, als ob die Antwort "ja" sein wird.Um die Einstellungen korrekt vorzunehmen, musste ich die Bedienungsanleitung überfliegen. Das ist nicht unbedingt 100%ig intuitiv. Aber es hat alles funktioniert. Die Funktionalität finde ich top (wenn einmal alles eingestellt ist). Die Fernbedienung mit echtem Lautstärkeregler (kurz drehen und keine Knöpfchen suchen und drücken) ist einwandfrei.Das beste ist für mich der Klang. Ich hatte bisher nichts Besseres. Ich höre Frequenzen, die ich zuvor nicht kannte und, wenn der Bass dann einsetzte ... ein Gedicht :-)

I use this mainly for the internet radio. Beautiful sound. Also good quality CD player and nice phono connection to a turntable. I have used all these connections and sound remains very good through them all.
