Southern Daughter: The Life of Margaret Mitchell
A**E
Interrogates the "Gone With the Wind" Experience From Every Worthwhile Perspective.
This is one of the finest author biographies I've ever read. The author gives Margaret Mitchell the full scholarly treatment, immersing himself and us in the subject matter on every level. As a lover of author biographies, I treasure this one for all that it tells me about Mitchell personally --- her upbringing, her education, what books she read and loved, her correspondence, her health, her marriage, etc and how she approached the writing of a novel that would make literary history. In highly readable prose the author takes us through the unique and record setting publication of the most popular novel ever printed in English, its transformation into one of the most popular movies of all time, and explores how all of this impacted Mitchell right up to the end of her life in a tragic car accident. I don't think one could ask for a better written, better documented life of any creative artist, or a better written more entertaining book on any popular culture legend. And the book is fun. Pyron's style is accessible and inviting. Just about every question I ever had about Mitchell and the whole "Gone With the Wind" phenomenon has been answered here. This is indispensable for lovers of GWTW, and certainly a very worthwhile read for those who are merely curious about this remarkable novel and its unique history in America. For writers who want to know about what other writers experience from the beginning to the end of their careers, this is fabulous. Highly recommended.

Good Biography - Poor Service
This biography met my expectations. It provides a detailed and interesting account of Margaret Mitchell's life. The condition of the book, however, was advertised as "new" by the supplier. In fact it is a used book. The upper part of the hard cover spine in particular shows significant wear. The outer cover is also damaged along the upper and lower edges.

A gift of a read
Got this for my granddaughter but i read it before giving it to her and I am grateful I did - I understand Ms. Mitchell so much more now and her own volumes became more understandable knowing her as I now do.

It was good. Thanks!

Paid for new, got worn and used.
Paid 3x the price for a new copy vs. a used copy. Copy that was delivered looks like it was a library book. Complete with plastic dust cover jacket and writing on some of the pages. Lots of wear on the book as well. Made the gift look very cheap and thoughtless. I guess I should have opened the package before gifting it. Very disappointed.
