An Out-Of-This-World look Behind-the-Scenes!
"Flash!" It's almost impossible to hear the name without hearing the theme inside your head. A film filled with such lavish visuals it was almost impossible to take it all in with one viewing. If you love the movie, then you're going to adore this book! Packed with rare photos and art, chances are you're going to discover details that slipped by you while watching the 1980 classic. And you'll definitely learn things about the production you never knew before. While other filmmakers were trying to imitate George Lucas, producer Dino De Laurentiis, director Mike Hodges and screenwriter Lorenzo Semple, Jr. teamed up to take audiences back the ORIGINAL star warrior, Flash Gordon. The result was candy for the eyes and ears, a state-of-the-art take on a cosmic classic. Capturing the sense of fun and adventure from the original comic strips, it was also one of the most beautifully-photographed fantasy films of its day. Author and filmmaker John Walsh manages to deliver an elegant book befitting such a film. Anyone spotting this on your shelf or coffee table will be picking it up and thumbing through it. (The more polite ones, of course, will wait 'til you're out of the room.)

Perfect for all Flash Gordon fans
If you like the cult classic movie Flash Gordon from 1980, you will like this book. It has all the colorful photos you would expect from a coffee table book like this. The section on the main characters, including Sam J. Jones, Melody Anderson and even the future James Bond Timothy Dalton, will not disappoint. Each actor has a unique story with regard to filming 'Flash Gordon' you would be interested to know about. There are numerous photos of the film sets (remember the blue and red sky with the flying birdmen). There are ample details about the filming of the picture and just about anything you would want to know about the film. It's been a 40-year wait for a book like this about the film, but it's certainly worth the wait, given the high quality of the book throughout.

Flash is a smash!
Flash - ah AH! If you say this every time you think of the movie, you’ll say it every time you think of this book. Longer than John Walsh’s ‘Escape From New York – The Official Story of the Film’ (also highly recommended), ‘Flash’ is a tour de force. It told me so much about a film I loved all those years ago and a beautiful ‘trip down memory lane’, as exhilarating as Flash’s ride on the space scooter. ‘Flash’ delves into all aspects of the production. There’s a fair bit to read, but you don’t notice it – the presentation style is the key – some parts get the ‘here, sink your teeth into this’ treatment; others are ‘now try this tasty morsel’, while a third group is ‘here’s a tit-bit’ type. The photographs are wonderful, the sketches amazing. I found the treatment of the costumes and weapons especially interesting. The interviews are great, informative, with good stuff on some ‘interpersonal’ issues. So, get this book – the hardback version if you’ve got the coin – and, courtesy of John Walsh, you too will discover that even after all these years, ‘Gordon’s ALIVE!’

Hats off to filmmaker and author John Walsh for doing a great job here. I rushed back to watch the film after reading. You will too!

Good Book for a Hardcore fan
I am a huge fan of the Flash Gordon movie and wanted to read about behind the scenes stories AND see pictures of the sets. The book starts off a little slow with interviews from the various cast members - which was “okay” just not what I really wanted. They basically just build up the movie of how great it was and how misunderstood it was and how fabulous it was, blah, blah, blah. Okay, I loved the movie and it’s fun - greatest movie ever - no. I wanted to see and read more about the behind the scenes antics and set design. The pictures in the book were a little disappointing - yes, there are some (not a lot) of behind the scenes pics - BUT many of them were thumbnail size. WHY? The book is huge (as in physical size)... why these little 1inch pictures of the stuff I was really interested in??? Yes, there are a few good stories and , yes, there are a few good pictures - but not nearly what I wanted or expected. So, from that stand point the book was disappointing. However, if you are a fan of the movie - like me - it is a good read. I read it cover-to-cover and liked it. BUT, it should have been a whole lot more. Maybe the pics I wanted don’t exist(?)... maybe production went too fast to capture many pics (?)... I don’t know. I was just left wanting a little more. However, they did interview nearly everyone that was affiliated with the movie - actors, extras (would heave liked more of them), production designers, artists, etc. which was great. Overall a good - not great - book on the making of a classic movie.

GORDON IS ALIVE !!
First reading of 2021 ! I had a wonderful time ! Being a fan of the film, John Walsh book was a pure enjoyment. Every step of the production is detailed, with a lot of movie and production stills. But there are many treasures : Ferdinando Scarfiotti's designs for the unmade Nicolas Roeg version, many pictures of alternate endings and unfinished SFX shots. Colorful and informative.
