Size:1/2 Pound HISTORY OF CACAO: Common Name: Cacao, Kakaw The name 'cacao' comes from the Náhualt tongue cacahualtl. Indigenous Name: Xau (Maya), Cacau (Yucatán), Caco (Pocomchí) Kicou, kikob (Pocomchi) Cu-culat (Salamá) Pacxoc (Huehuetenango) Botanic Name: Theobroma cacao (given by Carl Linnaeus, which in Latin means “Food of the Gods”.) Uses: Its main use today is to make chocolate. The Ancient Maya used the seeds as currency, which means there was a time when money actually DID grow on trees. Historically 2,500 years ago in the Maya lowlands, the Maya were making a chocolate drink from cacao. In the beginning of the 17th Century, a delegation of Quechi Maya nobles from Alta Verapaz, Guatemala, introduced the cacao drink to the Spanish court. Chocolate was actually the first drink of the Europeans, BEFORE coffee or tea were introduced! Chocolate remained an elite drink, too expensive for the average person to enjoy, and often, even forbidden. Until- a Dutchman, (Mr. Van Houten,) invented a way of making the drink into a solid. The first candy bar! Chocolate became "big business" and the cultivation of the cacao tree was spread all across the globe.

Best I've ever tasted. Period.
A friend brought this to me from Guatemala. Unlike any chocolate I've ever had anywhere- and i try them all. This one has an exquisite, intense chocolate flavor, with just the right amount of sweetness. I made it with water first to check out all the flavors, and wow... no milk needed here to make it rich and thick. I put in the blender to froth it up, (be careful though!) and I think that's the secret. This is real cacao! So happy to find it here. I will be ordering lots more. As an avid chocolate freak, I highly recommend!

Quite disappointed w/this cocoa
Quite disappointed w/this cocoa. Too sweet for my taste & after reading how bitter thus was w/ notes of cinnamon I certainly didn't find that to be true and I do have a well developed palate. I will not buy again. However if you like sweeter chocolate this product is for you; it is just far too expensive when it appears to just be hot cocoa & not really so special at all.not what I was looking for
