BUY!! Even if you don’t plan on living in the D!
LOVE THIS BOOK! First it is hilariously accurate ! 2nd it’s very well written ! 3rd Literally anyone who is even going to visit Detroit should read this !!! As a local I’ve lived in suburbs and worked in Detroit . Both kids started at a College for Creative Studies Fall if 2021 and I bought them copies - I didn’t know how great the book was - I just thought title sounded about right for Detroit ! I found myself tabbing pages for then and underlining stuff that was right on the mark ! Still need to buy another copy for myself ai love it so much ! I’ll probably buy more as gifts as well. Now the books I got them are in their dorm rooms - so ai thinks it’s helping a kid from Florida and another from Taiwan acclimate to Detroit while not acting like a..h….! LOL Seriously - even if not going to Detroit read this book - it’s really relevant in so many ways - and probably relevant to other cities as well!

Fun to read book
Fun to read book, and a great introduction to a city I've lived near but never really went to - until last year. I'm a Detroit resident now, outside the hype of downtown in a great neighborhood on the NW side of the city. The book is a fun read. Could have used it when I first moved in. Mostly I'd say his guidelines fall under the category of simple respect. Mostly though, I see a (hopefully) good author coming up and look forward to more books from him.He does go a bit far in my opinion (I guess this is me being a jackass) from time to time, e.g. when he rips on Shinola for building the brand on the back of the city. I do think we should be encouraging more Shinola's in the city, and maybe we could understand the mutual benefit of a company like Shinola leveraging the Detroit moniker.

Absolute must-read for newcomers
I somewhat accidentally moved to a pre-cool part of Detroit around 6 Mile and Livernois this summer from a metro-Detroit suburbMan, do I wish I had read this book first. I figured this would be all comedy, but there's a lot of solid information in here for newcomers.I grew up in the metro area about 30 minutes north of the city and found this book very helpful, even after living here for 6 months, so if you're planning on moving here from New York or something, you need this. When I first moved to Detroit, absolutely everyone that's never lived here had endless amounts of advice that was, in retrospect, completely insane, and often with racist undertones. So far, not a single tidbit of wisdom from someone that's never lived here has played out, except the high car insurance. So spare yourself the trouble. Ignore the people telling you not to stop at stop signs because you'll get carjacked, and just read this book instead.

I enjoyed this. It is written from the perspective of a black, gay man and I wanted to point that out b/c it's a population that may overlook this one. I thought it may be a kind of hipster tome that would be funny, but it wasn't. It is informative and truthful about some of the issues in Detroit and how it came to be like that, but is written in a pithy enough style not to be a cudgel to the head. A good buy and a fast read.

Great Book about Detroit
I first visited to Detroit in June 2015...and I acted like a complete jackass. I pretended to hop the fence at Michigan Central Station, I took an instagram photo of myself in an abandoned lot, and I toured the forsaken Packard Plant. At the time I knew I was being disrespectful but I didn't care because I never thought I'd be there again. But the longer I was in the city, the more I came to love it. This book is important for the people who want to pay Detroit the respect it deserves. Aaron Foley writes fluidly about every topic pertinent to the city. When my friends ask me why I like Detroit so much, I'll hand them this book.

A must read for any Michigander!
I really loved this book! Foley was not shy about dealing with any topic—history, racism, sexism, gentrification, the arts, the cars, etc. He was open and honest about his own upbringing, lending beautiful vulnerability to his pages. Most importantly, you can tell how much he loves Detroit!I loved the recommendations on where to visit, the history of the neighborhoods, and tips on how to become part of the Detroit community. All in all, a great read.

Highly recommended!
I did not expect this book to be so good. i expected it to be snarky, which it is, and informative, which it also is. But I didn't expect the depth, the thoughtfulness, the pain and the love. In sharing his own experience of Detroit, Foley shows newcomers the value of paying as much attention to Detroits people as they do to its real estate and arts scenes.

Essential read!!
It was better than advertised—its condition was like new. It was a gift for a new Detroit area resident. This social commentary is a thoughtful must read not only about Detroit but about too many US areas that lack inclusivity & diversity.
