Reliable but annoying
On the plus side, this is a very reliable thermometer. The first one lasted about 3 years before I fried the cord. The cost of a new unit was not much more than the cord alone, so I went that way, and the new one has lasted a couple years with no problems. On the other hand the overall design is a mess. The top half of the display tells you what type of meat you are cooking. Even if you don't use that feature you will always see "BEEF" in big, bold letters. The on/off switch is a tiny little thing on the back of the unit. You set the temperature using the HR and MIN buttons to move the temp up or down, respectively. What could be more intuitive than that? And to this day I don't know what the MODE and TASTE buttons do, nor do I care.Bottom line is I decided to write this review because I'm going to retire this dinosaur and am checking Amazon for something better. I'm tired of this love/hate relationship.

It's simple and very functional
I searched around Amazon quite a bit before finding this little gem. The product is very simple in design, it just reports the oven temp and the meat temp. It seems to work great, so far no problems or issues with the thermocouple. The product has a (very minor) drawback. If you use the alarm feature you can only increase the alarm temp, and once it hits the max it cycles around.. Hint: If you switch over to Centigrade mode this goes faster if you accidentally go past your desired set point. However, since the alarm isn't very loud I don't even bother with it at all. There are other, much fancier and overly designed products out there, but they have more parts that can break, require more batteries etc.. This one only requires a single AAA! Also, I really like that the probe handle measures the oven temp while the tip measures the meat temp, then you only need the have 1 wire sticking out of the oven to do both measurements. How useful!UPDATE: The temperature probe stopped working after a couple years, it just started to report inaccurate temperatures. It's a shame, I really liked this product and I am tempted to just replace it with another of the same unit (over a year is decent life for a plastic thing these days..)

Still Working Great After Much Use. Alarm Could Be Louder. Recommended
I have wanted a probe thermometer for years but never got around to it. In November 2012 I decided I was done with checking the Thanksgiving turkey constantly. The opening and closing of the oven losing heat each time bothered me. I searched Amazon for one I could afford. I really wanted one with a remote but they were prohibitively expensive for me. This was a much better price. I struggled with the decision as we've really been having to watch our pennies since the recession hit. $25 won't break us but we can't afford to throw it away either. I kept hesitating over all the negative reviews and didn't want to pay the money only to find I only got one Thanksgiving dinner out of it or, worse yet, find it didn't work at all on the big day. I broke down and bought it, used it on Thanksgiving, and it worked perfectly. The setting of it can be a bit tricky but I got the hang of it pretty quickly. I've now used it for another Thanksgiving and a couple of turkeys we roasted in between for sandwich meat as well as pork roasts and different cuts of beef roasts. Our housemate is a chef and he has a tendency to put my instant read digital thermometer in his top pocket leaving me scrambling when I need it. I have pulled this out of the drawer and used it in a pinch and it worked well for that, too. It is still working perfectly today. The settings for the various meats are sometimes a little high for me as I tend to pull meats and let them reach final temperature during the resting phase but I found the pre-sets easy to override. The only complaint is the alarm is not loud enough to hear from another room. That is the reason I took one star off. It's not a big problem for me-just means I have to keep an eye on it but as my main purpose was to be able to check temps without opening the oven, that's not a big issue. Nothing in my kitchen is handled with care. This thing takes a beating like everything does when I cook. I should have reviewed earlier but I did want a good body of work behind the product before I commented. This one has stood the test of time and wear. I'd recommend it to anyone watching their budget who has a need for a probe thermometer.

Good for the price.
After questioning my "spring type" cheapie oven thermometer a couple times too many, I decided to give this one a shot. I like the fact it reads both the temperature of the ambient oven, and the internal temperature of the probe. It does that and seems to be reasonably accurate.People seem to get upset that the probe and ambient sensors don't agree exactly. Mine seems to differ about 2° at room and fridge temperatures, and a little more than that at oven temps. Even 10° at 350° is probably close enough - that's only 3% which isn't going to make a big difference except in science experiments. The functional ergonomics of this thing are abysmal. It takes a lot of experimental button pressing to make it do what you want. The button labels are pretty poor. The instructions aren't exactly clear either. Luckily it doesn't do enough to make that a huge problem. The magnets on the back are strong enough, but don't inspire a lot of confidence. Because my oven vents directly onto the stove top, I keep it stuck to the side. While fiddling with the cord I've knocked it off the side a couple times - it seemed to handle the 28" drop without a problem.Note: they're not kidding about the range. It will not read below 32° - if that's important to you, look elsewhere.

Multiuse
Used this to check the temperature of a chicken that I was slow cooking - very interesting seeing how gradual a slow cooker heats up!The stainless steal wire is brilliant - no need to keep opening oven doors etc. to stab your food, just stick in in the deep part and wait for the alarm. It could also double up as a smoke/fire alarm if you leave it on to alarm at around 50C air temparature (unless you're in a very hot country the room temperature is very unlikely to exceed that so something would be amiss!)One thing I am not sure of though is battery life.Edit to say I have used this now for some lamb chops and it worked brilliantly - attached with the magnetic strip to the oven fine and the steel coil was left in the whole time. Perfectly cooked.another edit sometime later - i have now used this too cook an easter turkey (14lbs) managed to dif it very deep into the breast and wait for it too hit 180F before letting the turkey rest for 20 mins (while finishing the veg and yorkshires and stuffing). best turkey EVER. i think a lot of food is overcooked in this country (UK, tho this may be the western world in general) due to the amount of information we have on what food can cause and do too you. i can't recommenend this product enough, although i see it's around 3 more sheets (£18) then when i got it (£15). oh well, inflation or deflation, this is an essential imo now!!!

Excellent item. Mine has just packed up and on ...
Excellent item. Mine has just packed up and on ordering the new one, Amazon reminded me that I purchased the original item in 2010. 5 years of regular use. Top Notch. I had never used a thermometer before this one but it transformed my cooking. Before, in an effort to ensure I didn't undercook, I used to nuke everything. After purchasing this I had the confidence to go with the settings and, apart from the chicken which seems to overcook (safe I guess!) it really is very good.Overall then, an excellent item that is accurate, sturdy, useful and very good value. Best thing I can say about it is that I have just bought a new one after all these years!

Disappointed with this
Disappointed with this. Worked fine for about two weeks then started to malfunction with the two parts of the probe giving different readings even when in exactly the same temperature. I can't rely on it being accurate so whats the point of having it?

Does its job
I have a number of these gadgets from different manufacturers and they all have the same problem, which is that the lead on the probe breaks down. No one seems to just sell the actual probes.

Leave in probe cooking thermometer
I have used this a few times now and I am very impressed. The screen is clear and simple. The audiable warning is loud enough. The wire reaches from inside my oven to the worktop with no problem.I was concearned that it would only measure in farenheight but a click of a switch on the back changed it to celsius.Excelent product and well worth the money.
