Q: does it leak at all? I plan on carrying it in a backpack so it may not always be upright

I carry mine in my gym bag and my son carries his in his backpack and we've never had a problem with leaking. It has a great seal and a locking mechanism to keep it from opening. The only way it leaks is if the top isn't put on correctly.

Q: Does the flip lid get in the way when drinking?

The lid is spring loaded so it stays open and out of the way while drinking.

Q: Is the glass material borosilicate?

Unless you plan to bake with it, that shouldn't matter. Borosilicate (pyrex) is for things like baking dishes. It can handle things like taking a dish out of the fridge and putting it directly into a hot oven without cracking. Normal glass works just fine for any scenario that I can think of for a water bottle, and it will be a touch lighter.
