Q: does the variable power knob instantaneously control the motor speed or is there a lag?

I don't notice a lag at all. It take a moment to munch everything up at low speed, then I open it up to full speed for no more than 20 to 30 seconds. Plenty of time to blend everything smooth.

Q: will this model crush/chop icecubes for frozen bar drinks?

Yes. It crushed the ice cubes and frozen berries for me with no problem.

Q: Where is it made? Anyone been making smoothies where ice needs to be crushed daily? If so, please, how long has it been performing under pressure? Thx

"The blade is made in Japan and the container in the United States. The rest is made and assembled in China," according to an email the company sent me in response to the question.
