Even Better Than Expected
Bought this for my 10 year old grandson, who is aware of the whaling histories of both New Bedford and Nantucket, having visited both Whaling Museums. It's going to be a Christmas gift and I'm sure he'll enjoy it...because I did. I've read Moby Dick a couple of times, and it is a deserving classic but Melville does tend to drag on in minutia. This is a great condensation of the actual story itself. Maybe I'll buy another to keep so that the spouse and I can do quick research there instead of plowing through the original (and we have done that more than once).

A classic on an easier level
Honestly, I was not a huge fan of Moby Dick when I read it in high school. With that said, my 9 year old son was interested in this because he is a voracious reader and loves anything to do with ships, etc. He felt it was an "easy" read (mind you, he is an above average reader) so I think most 9 year olds would find this a good on-level book. They will appreciate it is a "chapter book" but the chapters are typically very short so that it wouldn't intimidate those just starting in on those types of books. He started to ask questions to the point that I had to read his book to remind myself of some of the details (which I think says a lot about this book and the accuracy). It is a hardcover which means it will last a long time, and I really do see myself keeping this book as one of several to pass down to his children.Even though this book was "below" his reading level in regards to vocabulary, etc., he was still entertained by the story and enjoyed talking with me about it. I think he liked the fact he knew about something that I didn't learn about until high school!

Great way to introduce great literature
I actually got this for my husband who likes literature from this time period. And he loves this book. He likes that there are illustrations. And I do too. They really add to the story. It's also a book that we'd like our children to read, and they're interested, because of the illustrations. A great idea and a great book. I think this series can be bought for any age.

A old classic in an easy-to-read format!
This has been a fun read for my 9-year-old. The classic story is, of course, gripping enough to keep him interested. What sets this version apart is the formatting, which makes it easier to read, specifically:-Larger font than the adult version. I'd say 12 or 13 pt font size.-Short chapters - Often two pages, sometimes up to 4 pages.-Short paragraphs - The longest paragraph in a chapter is usually about 8 lines.-Plenty of white space - Space at the end of the chapter, space between paragraphs, and generous margins all around.-Pictures - There is a picture about every other chapter or so. Sometimes just a little drawing, most often a quarter of a page in color, and sometimes a full page in color. All those factors lead to a book where your little reader is turning pages and finishing chapters often and has the mental break and reward of a picture coming up soon, while still reading plenty of words. I think it's just perfect for kids aged 7-11.

Good intro into a classic
I have to be honest, I never read Moby Dick so I can't say how this compares to or how accurately it captures the essence of the original. Each chapter is only a page or two long so it is very easy for younger kids to keep up with. So far, the kids are about half way through the book and they haven't given up on it yet.
