Extremely Bright, But Voltage Sensitive
I purchased these light chips to replace the incandescent light bulbs in some specialty interior lights on a boat. I found that these lights are very sensitive to voltage level. At 12VDC the light is fairly dim, it is almost indistinguishable to the output of an old 40-watt incandescent bulb. At 13VDC the light is significantly brighter, similar to a 70-watt bulb. At 14VDC the light is super bright to the point of a 100-watt equivalent. If you own a Boat or RV the light output will be dim if you're running strictly off your battery. With your motor or generator running you will get a super bright light. The light chips are rated between 15 - 17 Volts DC. My experience shows that they are actually rated between 12 - 17 Volts DC with 12 being the lowest threshold of performance.

Bright Warm Lights
At 12v they barely light to where you can see the individual LEDs inside the COB. At 14v they are very bright, so the 15-17v range sounds about right. To use them properly you should use a constant current source, which would also allow you to control their brightness w/o changing their color temperature. I have a feeling that they are using 6000-6500K LEDs in the COB and that they colored the silicone coating to change the color temperature.If you are using them at full power, you will probably need to use a heat sink and have some air flow around them. If you don't plan to use them at full power, you may be able to get away w/o a heat sink, but it would depend upon how hot they get at the level you need to operate them at. The same goes for airflow. At low levels you probably would not need to worry about heat at all.At the time of this review you get 10 pieces for $7.99, which is not bad. These could be used indoors or outdoors, as long as you design the system properly. If this is something that you are looking for, I can definitely recommend them. Like any other LED, these should last for at least 18 years as long as you don't over drive them.
