Excellent harness - Tried several others and this one is absolutely superior. Would buy again, probably won't have to.
I absolutely love this harness. Have tried several others (all cheaper, didn't want to spend very much on a harness) and this is 100% worth the investment.Living in Hoboken, NJ, a pretty dense, highly-populated urban area. I've got a medium sized, 9-month-old German Shepherd mix (runt of the litter, so she's a bit small for her size but her girth measures about 27 inches). She is very active and playful, and loves to be outside. I use a retractable leash (Flexi Explore Retractable Belt Dog Leash, Large, 26-Feet Long) which I attach to a lumbar pack and wear around my waist so I don't have to hold it when we walk.Previously used a rope harness, which was a huge pain to put on because she didn't want to lift her feet up. Wanted an over-the-head, easy to use harness, so I went with a mesh one (Best Pet Supplies Wearable Harness). Started off with a medium, which she outgrew very quickly, and then moved up to the XL. These are OK harnesses. I like these in particular because in addition to being over-the-head, the metal ring for the leash is situated in the center of the harness (also tried one by RC Pet, where the clasp is at the back, touching her skin; she seems bothered by this, especially in the cold. Regardless, the RC Pet one broke within a few weeks). The problems I encountered with the Best Pet harnesses are as follows: first, they are kind of flimsy and subject to her chewing - she will rip right through it with a few chomps. Second, and more importantly, when she pulls (which she does when she's excited), they stretch out, which requires twice the effort to pull her back. I went through three of these in six months before I decided to move up to something more sturdy.I did a lot of research into this, and though the Ruffwear was kind of pricey, it seemed to be sturdier than the others, and I liked the idea of a dual clasp system to close it around her body. Also like the idea of an ID pocket, and the two options (front and back) for leash attachment. We've never tried out the front leash attachment but I like that I could if I wanted to, if the pulling got too serious. The shipping took a while, but this is because I am used to Prime. It arrived on the last day of the shipping estimate. The vendor was Animal Grace. Aside from the shipping time, I really like this vendor, because a) the packaging was minimal (the Best Pet harness came in a box big enough for a golf club... very wasteful and unnecessary) and b) there was a personalized, hand-writen note on my receipt that just said 'hello,' which made me smile. Thank you Animal Grace, and hello back to you.So this harness. I ordered a medium for her, though she is on the low end of that size, I figured it'd be good if she gets bigger. Here's why it's awesome:- It is completely adjustable, which is really nice and makes me feel like I won't have to buy another (unless she explodes in size, which is unlikely)- The effort required to pull her back has been reduced by at least 50% because of the padding. It's so much easier to do now, and she is so much more responsive to even the slightest tug.- The padding seems extra comfortable for her, and she does not bite at it like she did with the mesh harnesses.- The leash attachment in the back is situated just above the edge of the harness so that it doesn't touch her skin, but also low enough that it is at the center of her back, which means the leash isn't hitting her face when she comes up from smelling something on the ground. It's also very sturdy and easy to attach the leash to.- Subtle reflector strips are very visible at night, which makes her visible to cars.- ID pocket is discreet (tucked in between the inside lining and the exterior lining, secured by velcro) and pretty roomy. It's also got a small loop of string to attach tags, so they don't fall out (which is unlikely given the amount of velcro. I like that in addition to the ID pocket, there's a little strip to write her name and my phone number on the inside lining.- Dual clasp system is so much nicer than the single clasp. Also the clasps are very sturdy, which I like.Overall this is a wonderful harness, and I do not regret spending the extra money on it. I don't think I'll have to buy another harness anytime soon, which is great. If I do it will definitely be this harness.

Very sturdy and reliable harness, have used it for 3 dogs now
These harnesses are great and consistent. I have now tested them on 3 dogs. I find one of the main issues with most dog harnesses to be sturdiness and durability. My dogs love to get themselves into messy situations and so I always want to buy something I know can take the abuse. I have yet to see any breaks or tears in the seems or stitching of the harnesses on any of the dogs; so it does appear they can take the wear and tear of every day dog life. The colors really pop and make the dogs easy to spot quickly. There is a metal lead connection point on the back and a small fabric lead connection point on the front of the harness. The size can be adjusted in two spots: around the neck and the other around the dogs mid section so you can get an optimal fit. I find the harness to be sturdy enough to support the weight of the dog in a way that gives control while still being comfortable for the dog. I was able to try this on our puppy and another not well behaved dog. In both situations I was confident in the harness being able to give me control of the dog. For the puppy that often liked to sprawl out and not continue walking, I could easily snatch her up by the harness without worrying the straps would loosen or the harness would hurt her in some way. Also for my dog who isn't a good walker, it gave me much better grip in directing her and resisting her from pulling away from me. My other dog just loves to play and while it has gotten pretty dirty (as you can see in the picture), it has definitely endured a lot of abuse including hikes through heavily wooded park trails, swimming through lakes, lounging in mud puddles, and of course your everyday fetch session. The dogs never seem to mind having the harness on. They are always excited to put it on (mostly because it means going for walks) but I never see them itching at the straps or acting differently with it on when they are at ease or at play. Each dog has a bit of a different body type and I was able to adjust the harness to fit each of them without difficulties, although the back straps admittedly gave me more trouble than they should, this was likely my fault and not the products ;)I was able to use a medium harness for all my dogs and it does seem to be a bit universal judging by the reviews others have left here. I think if you are in between sizes for your dog you should likely go up a size ESPECIALLY if your dog is strong or tends to pull harder. While you can likely extend the straps to fit with either size, going the size up will help with the sturdiness in resisting your dogs pulling. I was in between a small and medium for one of the dogs and while it does seem a bit big on her, I can tighten it up and really get a better grip on her in public (she's not as well behaved as the others haha). So I was happy for going up a size and I feel medium would work for most average sized dogs.At first I was a bit turned off by the price of this product but for the quality and consistency I have gotten from RUFFWEAR, I believe it is worth it. While a cheaper harness could do the same job, I find my experience with cheaper harnesses to not be as reliable as the RUFFWEAR harness which is why I have it for all 3 of my dogs now.
