Harmony Gear High Volume Bilge Pump for Kayaks - Handheld Bilge Pump

This is just a good pump. I had one and left it somewhere on a trip. Darn. Tried another brand just for fun, a quality pump, but it took a lot of muscle to pump it. Got tired of that and got another Harmony. Nice size, good feel, moves a lot of water, looks good. Works for me.

Light weight, decent flow, does what it says it should. What else could ya ask for?!

When we first started kayaking, we got the NRS safety kit from REI, also available here. I still use the velcro close mesh bag as my stern ditty bag, holding sunscreen, sponge, and pump, but in the shallow mountain rivers we paddle there's not much need for the paddle float or self rescue straps, but they're good items to have in the home kit for possible future adventures. That's a long way of saying we've used multiple brands of bilge pumps when kayaking with friends over the past several years, and the NRS pump https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00TXR2FAE/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_glt_fabc_SMGVKEWKPBVAEQG3GCQQ is hands down the best one for ergonomics and efficiency.When you flip or swamp your boat, however, if you're not at a place where you can dump most of the water before pumping, any hand pump is going to be exhausting. After searching for double action pumps, I decided to try out this Harmony. After several outings, I can say that I prefer the NRS, but this has several good features.Pros:1. This is efficient. Filling up a gallon bucket, and counting each up and each down as a stroke, this emptied the bucket in 26 strokes compared to 36 for the NRS.2. Low profile design. The short outlet will make it easier to yank out of your deck numbers if that's where you keep it.3. Other design features. I appreciate the little loop on the neck that allows for a small line to be strung for attaching a leash. The natural support hand placement on this is well away from the pinch point where the handle stops on the downward stroke (I've been nipped by the NRS several times).Cons:1. Overall feels less sturdy than the NRS. The rod is slimmer and movement less smooth.2. Pump output is messy and inconsistent. The double action may move water faster, but I'm not sure you'd actually empty your boat faster. On the up stroke, the water gurgles and dribbles out that shorter spout, and in the down stroke can shoot pretty far, so unless you can finagle a great angle, most of the up stroke will end up not making it over the lip if the deck. I have to rearrange placement of the pump while using it more than the NRS.3. Pump action is less smooth. Compared to the NRS, this pumps more jumpy. I don't have a good way to describe it, other than the NRS feels like Its lubricated and this one doesn't (neither is ).That said, the Harmony is superior to any other pump we've tried, and a close second to the NRS. My spouse and I both strongly prefer the NRS, and if we hadn't missed the return window likely would have sent the Harmony back.

This works REALLY well. I bought one earlier and had lent to my sister during a recent kayak outing. She loved it, so I bought her one.I have a foldable kayak with low sides and often have water come in, so I always take this along.

Had to use one of these pumps on our last outing, just works great, keeps pumping when kept in the water at the bottom of the Kayak hull and just works great. No need to worry about it getting lost with the floating soft blue outer jacket. Bought one for every kayak and am 100% satisfied.

Did not have to use this yet, which is a good thing. But I did test it out with a big bucket of water, and it pumps a good amount of water with little effort.It’s surrounded by nice soft foam. It floats great, which has happened a couple of times.

I recently bought this and have not capsized in my kayak since, but I did test it out. I was curious, you know, without an output hose how well would it throw the water outside the kayak? So I filled up a very large bowl, a gallon or two, put it in the tub and tried out the pump. First pump. Whoops! Holy Smokes! That went WAY farther than I expected. To test it I had to put the pump at the very end of the tub and it still threw water all the way to the other end of the tub. And that was with not very energetic pumping! Very impressive. I see now why it doesn't come with an output hose. There is absolutely no need for one.Feels solid, also very light. The foam sleeve makes it comfortable to grip and the deck bungies get a good grip on it.
